Sania wins ITF title in Britain
August 08, 2004 20:18 IST
Adding one more feather to her cap, Sania Mirza upset top seed Irina Boulykina of Russia to win the 10,000 dollar ITF women's title at Wrexham, England.
Trailing by a set, Sania bounced back superbly to defeat Boulykina (world no. 238) 1-6, 6-4, 6-1 in the final to win her eighth professional title and third this year, information reaching in Hyderabad on Sunday.
Playing under gusty wind conditions, Sania misjudged the speed and was taken aback by the crosscourt shots of the Russian in the first set.
But the 17-year-old teen tennis sensation regained her touch soon and the battle of attrition ended in Sania's favour in the second set as the fighting Russian was humbled by some quality tennis and sheer grit shown by the former Wimbledon girls doubles champion.
After trailing 1-4, Sania made a remarkable comeback keeping her cool and methodically demolished the Russian's attack to pick up points the hard way to win the set 6-4.
The decider was packed with punch and power as Sania easily cruised her way to win the third set and match.
Sania, who earlier this year won in USA and Italy, is likely to get two bonus points for defeating a player ranked inside 250.
