Last year he finished third in the British Formula 3 Scholarship class, becoming the first Indian to win four races in the class.

On Tata Group's association with Chandok, Romit Chaterji, Vice President-Corporate affairs, Tata services Ltd, said: "Karun Chandok is an exciting prospect and his performances last year have really made us take note of this budding talent. We have decided to support him in his endeavour in the 2004 season and, hopefully, it will be a beginning of a long-term association with this exciting prospect."

Chandhok was thrilled and excited about being supported by Tatas.

"The Tata Group has been supporting sports for a long time now, and has supported many illustrious sportsmen in the past. To be chosen by the Tatas serves as an endorsement of my abilities. I hope to live up to their expectations and do them proud," he said.

In 2004, Chandok will be sponsored and supported by JK Tyres, Tata Group, UCAL Mikuni Fuel Systems, Parx, Madhouse, UK and Kingfisher, a statement from Tatas said.

Tata Group also supports India's brightest Formula One hope Narain Karthikeyan in the World Series.
