Sania to train under Bob Brett in Italy
October 18, 2003 23:11 IST
Wimbledon girls' doubles champion Sania Mirza will go through a brief training stint with renowned coach Bob Brett in Italy later this year.
Sania, who turns 17 next month, will be one of the 24 youngsters who will take lessons from Brett, the player's management firm GloboSport said on Saturday.
"The aim of the short stint will be to work on specific areas of Sania's game like her service, shot selection and planning of points during matches," said Anirban Blah of GloboSport.
"Sania has been able to assert herself against lower or equal ranked players, but her performance has not been consistent against those ranked above her.
"That is another area Brett will look into," Blah said from Bangalore.
Brett will decide the duration of the programme.
Sania will play in the $25,000 women's event in Mumbai in November and follow it up with a two-week training session at the C G K Bhupathi Tennis Clinic in Bangalore before leaving for Italy.
The year 2004 will be crucial for Sania as she begins to play in the senior circuit.
The Hyderabad teenager will still be restricted in her tournament play -- not more than 13 events till she turns 18. Also, the fact that she has decided to not play in junior events means most of the season will be spent on "fitness training and tennis coaching".
The stint with Brett will not be a one-off one, Blah said.
"Sania will be going back to him regularly but her schedule will be drawn up by Brett as and when it happens," he said.
