Roy, Gupta to clash in final

Indian junior Davis Cup team members Rupesh Roy and Sumit Gupta romped into the boys' singles final in the ITF Grade 5 tournament in Islamabad in Friday.

Top seed Roy had an easy time, beating Shahzad Khan of Pakistan 6-3, 6-1, while No 2 seed Gupta was taken to three sets by compatriot Vivek Shokeen before winning 7-6(6), 3-6, 6-1 in the semi-finals.

After losing the opening game, Roy outplayed the Pakistani. He levelled scores at 2-all and then effected a break in the sixth game which sufficed for him to take the first set 6-3.

In the second set, the Indian broke in the third, fifth and seventh games to cruise home comfortably.

The second semi-final was in contrast as the two Indians battled it out over two-and-a-half hours. In the end it was Gupta's experience and staying power which won him the day.

Results:

Boys' singles (sem-finals):
Roy Rupash (India) beat Shahzad Khan (Pakistan) 6-3, 6-1
Gupta Sumit (India) beat Vivek Shokeen (India) 7-6(6), 3-6, 6-1.

Girls' doubles (final):
Ditthim Punjaporn / Khunpitak Punchanok (Thailand) beat Kakhandaki Shweta / Venkatesh Poojashree (India) 6-4,6-0.
