Schalken, Robredo to play in Tata Open
November 25, 2003 19:03 IST
World No.17 Sjeng Schalken of the Netherlands and Spaniard Tommy Robredo, ranked 21, will add to the strong field for the 2004 Tata Open ATP Tennis to be held at Chennai from January 5 to 11.
With the confirmation of these two, the field for the $400,000 season opener, South Asia's only ATP international series, has five players in the top 25, organisers said in a release at Chennai on Tuesday.
Carlos Moya of Spain (7), defending champion and Asia's best player Paradorn Srichaphan of Thailand (11) and Felix Mantilla (22) are the other top players who have already confirmed their entry in the country's premier ATP event being held for the eighth successive year.
Schalken, who won the Costa Do Sauipe and Hertogenbosch ATP titles this year, finished in the top 20 for the second year in a row and was a quarter-finalist at both, Wimbledon and the US Open.
The Dutch won both his singles match against India to lead his team into the Davis Cup World Group.
Robredo, who shocked Lleyton Hewitt and three-time champion Gustavo Kuerten at the French Open before eventually losing in the quarter-finals, had a very good season though an ATP title eluded him.
India's Leander Paes and Prakash Amritraj have been given the wild cards in the singles main draw, though the former, recuperating after treatment of a brain lesion, is yet to accept the offer.
