Jyoti tied-24th at Dunlop Phoenix
November 23, 2003 21:35 IST
Jyoti Randhawa fired a final round 72 to finish tied for the 24th position at the 200 million Yen, Dunlop Phoenix event played at the par-71 Phoenix Country Club at Miyazaki, Japan, on Sunday. Randhawa's tournament tally stood at two-over 286 in the Japanese PGA Tour event. According to information received, Thomas Bjorn won the title courtesy an impressive tournament tally of 12-under 272. Local golfer Daisuke Maruyama finished second two strokes behind the champion at ten-under 274. David Gossett, Lee Westwood and yet another Japanese pro Tetsuji HIratsuka were tied third at nine-under 275. Jyoti's round began with a birdie but a dropped shot on the very next hole undid the good work. The 31-year old Indian then went through a nightmare of sorts on the fourth hole, where he carded a quadruple bogey. Birdies on the sixth and eighth and bogeys on the fifth and ninth took him to the tenth tee at a dismal four-over. Jyoti however pulled all his experience together to stage an impressive recovery with birdies on the 11th, 13th and 18th. "The fourth hole undid my entire week's good work," said a dejected Randhawa. "I could definitely have essayed a top-ten finish otherwise," he added. Randhawa, who became the first ever Indian to win a Japanese Tour event when he came up trumps at the Suntory Open in September, finished tied-13th at the Mitsui Sumitomo Visa Taiheiyo Masters at Shisuoka last week. Final scores: 272_Thomas Bjorn (67,65,69,71); 274_Daisuke Maruyama (67,65,72,70); 275_David Gossett (69,71,67,68), Lee Westwood (69,72,68,66), Tetsuji Hiratsuka (68,65,74,68); 276_Sergio Garcia (66,65,67,78); 278_Hank Kuehne (66,75,64,73); 279_Kenichi Kuboya (67,70,70,72); 280_Tushimitso Izawa (67,69,67,77).
