Deportivo defender banned for headbutt

March 12, 2003 16:50 IST

Deportivo Coruna defender Cesar has been banned for four matches by the Spanish Football Federation for head-butting Villarreal striker Antonio de Nigris in a league match.

The incident occurred as the two jostled on the edge of the penalty area before a Villarreal free-kick in the 88th minute of the match on Saturday.

Mexican striker De Nigris fell to the ground clasping his head, but the referee's report stated that he was not injured.

Cesar was sent off. His side held on to win the match 2-1.

The Deportivo defender said he felt the punishment was excessive and hoped it would be reduced on appeal.

"It was just really nothing more than a gesture," he said. "I moved towards him and when I got close he fell to the ground. It is the first time that I have been banned for something like this so that should be taken into account."
