Uppal, Stephen Amritraj lose

Davis Cupper Vishal Uppal and Stephen Amritraj bowed out of the $5000 ITF men's Satellite tennis tournament (second leg) at the CLTA Complex in Chandigarh on Wednesday.

Takeshi Itho of Japan defeated Uppal 6-1, 7-6 (8/6) while Asian Games doubles bronze medallist Mustafa Ghouse accounted for Stephen Amritraj, son of former India doubles ace Anand Amritraj, in second round matches.

Another Amritraj, however, is still in the hunt for the title. Second seed Prakash, son of Indian tennis legend Vijay Amritraj, progressed to the quarter-finals with a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Jaco T Matthew.

Fourth Ajay Ramaswami ousted Malaysian Yew Ming Si 6-3, 6-4 and Vijay Kannan packed off Hayato Furukawa of Japan 7-6 (7/4), 6-2.

First round: Tomer Suissa (ISR) bt Kedar Tembe 6-2, 6-2; Prima Simpatiaji (INA) bt Rohan Gujjar 6-2, 7-6(2); Hayato Furukawa (JPN) bt  Dong-Whee Choi (Kor) 6-3, 6-1; 8-Eliran Dooyev (ISR) bt Saurabh Singh 6-1, 7-5.

Doubles (first round): Manoj Mahadevan and Rishi Dridhar bt Daniel Kiernam and Ajay Ramaswami 6-1, 3-3 (retd).
