Bhutia ready to return to action

January 28, 2003 15:53 IST

India football captain Baichung Bhutia hopes to resume playing in a couple of weeks after an injury to his left leg sidelined him for over 45 days.

Speaking at the inauguration of the ESPN-Star School Football Championship, in Kolkata, Bhutia said, "I need only a couple of weeks to get back to action. I am feeling fit and have started some very light exercise."

He said he was disappointed at not being able to play in the SAF Football championship in Dhaka because of the injury, and added that the team was hamstrung by injuries but did well with the limited resources.

Bhutia is raring to return to action in the National Football League, where Mohun Bagan are placed sixth. The Bagan coach and team are eagerly awaiting his return. Upfront, in tandem with Jose Barreto and George Ekka, his services are vital to revive the fortunes of the green and maroon brigade, who are without a major title this season.

Bhutia also informed that he is in constant touch with India coach Stephen Constantine, who, he said, is happy with the progress of his recovery.
