January 26, 2003 21:56 IST
A determined Salgaocar Sports Club put up a dazzling display to blank Kolkata's Tollygunge Agragami 3-0, after leading 2-0 at the breather, in their ninth round match in the National Football League, at the Nehru stadium,
Fatorda, Goa, on Sunday.
For winners, Jatin Bhist, 35th minute, Sunday Seah, 36th, and Alex Ambros, 66th, scored the goals.
Salgaocar would have romped home by at least half dozen goals had not the visitors' goalkeeper Arindam Ghosh brought off at least three spectacular saves.
With this win Salgaocar, from sixth place, moved on to fourth place with 16 points and are placed below leaders East Bengal, 21 points.
Dempo (20) and Vasco (18) follow in that order.
Tollygunge have eight points.
This was Salgaocar's fifth win. They had one draw and suffered three defeats.
The home team started with full steam and could have moved ahead in the 17th minute had not Tollygunge goalkeeper Ghosh brought off a fine save off a power packed shot from Sunday Seah, off a well measured pass from Jatin Bhist.
Salgoacar drew first blood in the 35th minute through Jatin Bhist after receiving a pass from Dharamjit Singh.
Inspired by the goal, they consolidated their lead in the next minute through Sunday Seah following a goalmouth melee when Tomba Singh sent a cross to Seah.
The home team could have increased their lead five minutes before the breather when Climax Lawrence gave a pass to Bello Rasaq, but his feeble shot from the close range was well collected by the rival goalkeeper.
The visitor's only good move in the first-half was in the third minute when Amitava Chanda floated a ball to Akeem Abolanke, whose try was parried away by Salgaocar goalkeeper Kalyan Chowbey.
After the change over, Salgaocar continued to attack and scored their third goal through Alex Ambrose in the 66th minute.
Ambrose, after receiving a pass from Dennis Cabral, beat the rival goalkeeper and shot in to make it 3-0.
Ambrose missed a couple more chances in the 75th and 85th minutes. First his try was well-fisted over by the goalkeeper and later his attempt sailed over the bar.
Salgaocar's medio Climax Lawrence was adjudged the man of the match.
