Megha Vakharia in semis

February 20, 2003 19:44 IST

Third seed Sai Jayalakshmi of India fell by the wayside in the Reliance-ITF women's tournament, beaten by unseeded Julia Vorobieva of Russia 5-7, 2-6 in the quarter-finals.

The Russian was a bit tentatively in the opening set, but raised her game in the second to surprise her seeded opponent and advance into the semi-finals.

She was joined in the last four by fourth seed Da-Jung Hong of Korea, fifth seed Akgul Amanmuradova of  Uzbekistan and unseeded Megha Vakharia of India.

Da-Jung rallied splendidly after losing the first set to get the better of eighth seed Wilawan Choptang of Thaliand 3-6, 6-2, 7-5 after a nearly two-and-a-half hour duel.

Vakharia started in whirlwind fashion against Montinee Angphong of Thailand. She blanked her opponent in the first set but faced tough opposition in the second set, which she lost in the tie-break. She, however, won the decider, wrapping up the match in an hour and fifty minutes at 6-0, 6-7 (3-7), 6-4.

In sharp contrast, Amanmuradova had an easy outing against Russia's Elena Vesnina, winning 6-4, 6-3.

Doubles quarter-finals: Akgul Amanmuradova/ Ivanna Israilova (Uzbekistan) bt Wilawan Choptang/Montinee Tangphong (Thailand) 6-1, 6-1; Shruti Dhawan/Sheetal Goutham (India) bt Iciri Rai/Preeti Rao 3-6, 6-2, 6-3.
