FIFA to control NFL dope testing
February 13, 2003 21:24 IST
Football's apex regulatory body FIFA will directly control the dope tests in the National Football League, expected to begin by the end of this month.
"FIFA has laid down in clear terms that the entire process would have to be strictly on the lines of the procedure followed in top international events like the World Cup," Asian Football Confederation medical committee member Dr Nishith Ranjan Chowdhury informed in Kolkata on Thursday.
Chowdhury, a sports medicine expert, said the issue was deliberated upon at the AFC medical committee meeting at Penang in Malaysia on January 26.
"The entire kit for the tests will be supplied by FIFA from its headquarters in Zurich," Chowdury, who was present at the AFC meet, said.
He said, the kit, which includes papers and sample collection equipment, would arrive in India in the next few days.
The random selection of matches for the tests would be done through draw of lots, which will be conducted by Malaysia-based AFC medical committee chairman Gurcharan Singh.
The samples would be sent through the AFC to FIFA, which would select the dope testing laboratories for analysing them.
