Vinod, Geeta emerge champs

December 29, 2003 15:59 IST

Top seed Vinod Sridhar of Tamil Nadu defeated VM Ranjeet 6-1, 6-3 in the final to win the men's singles title in the All India Ranking Tennis Tournament, at the Cosmopolitan Club, Bhimavaram, in Hyderabad, on Sunday.

Sridhar left nothing to chance and won the first set in quick time at 6-1.

Ranjeet tried to stage a comeback in the second set with some deft placements, but the champion proved his supremacy with a good blend of aggression and caution and settled the issue at 6-3.

In women's singles final, third seed Geeta Manohar ousted top seed Lata Assudani of Maharashtra 6-0, 6-4.

The diminutive Andhra Pradesh lass played some quality tennis in the first set to blank Lata. Packing all her energies and experience into the game, Lata tried to breathe life into the contest by winning four games but Geeta was a shade better and took the second set 6-4 verdict to emerge the new champion.

The men's doubles offered no surprises, with top seeds Vinod Sridhar and Kamala Kannan (TN) outplaying Anjan Viplav and Yasser Arafat (AP) 6-4, 6-2.
