Bhupathi-Mirnyi win in Montreal
August 11, 2003 11:25 IST
Indian doubles specialist Mahesh Bhupathi and partner Max Mirnyi defeated fourth seeds Jonas Bjorkman and Todd Woodbridge 6-3, 7-6(4) in the final of Tennis Masters Canada in Montreal on Sunday and captured their third title of 2003.
In this repeat of this year's Wimbledon final, Bhupathi-Mirnyi denied Woodbridge the opportunity to claim his 77th doubles title and tie John McEnroe for second place in the Open Era titles list.
In a close match, the top seeds managed to win against the experienced Swedish-Aussie pairing after a rain delay in the first set. The big push from Bhupathi and Mirnyi came in the second set tiebreaker, where they found themselves down 0-3 after losing two points on their serve. They quickly turned the tables and won 7 of the next eight points to win the match and the title.
This was Bhupathi-Mirnyi's second Tennis Masters Series shield this season following Tennis Masters Monte Carlo, where they defeated Michael Llodra and Fabrice Santoro in the final. Bhupathi, who won the Canada title with Leander Paes in 1997, now sports a total of 29 career titles, while Mirnyi has 17.
