India's Davis Cup play-off in Holland

April 10, 2003 15:34 IST

India have drawn The Netherlands for their Davis Cup World Group play-off tie.

The ITF announced the draw for the Davis Cup by BNP Paribas World Group play-offs, to be played between September 19 and 21, 2003, on Wednesday.

From the hot and humind conditions of Kolkata, where they beat New Zealand 4-1 in the Asia-Oceania second round tie, the Indian team will have to cope with the cold of the northern winter when they travel to The Netherlands for the match.

The venue and the surface are yet to be announced.

The Dutch blew a 2-1 lead and lost Sunday's singles in their 3-2 defeat by Switzerland in their first round match.

The winning nations in the World Group Play-offs will secure places in the 2004 Davis Cup World Group while the losing nations will compete in their respective Zonal Group I competitions.

The draw for the play-offs is (home nations listed first; * seeded nations in bold):

Austria v Belgium

Canada v Brazil

Thailand v Czech Republic

Germany v Belarus

Morocco v Great Britain

Netherlands v India

Ecuador v Romania

Slovak Republic v United States

India is ranked 14th in the new Davis Cup rankings, released on Monday. Actually India is tied 13th along with Germany with 2,812.5 points.

France leads the rankings in spite of losing in the quarter-finals to Switzerland. Switzerland moved up three places to be ranked No. 6, moving ahead of Sweden, the United States and the Netherlands. There are no changes in the top five positions.

Other big movers include the Slovak Republic, up seven places to No. 20, and Austria, who climb five positions to No. 21.
