Second singles match deferred due to rain

April 04, 2003 16:16 IST

The second singles match between India's Rohan Bopanna and Alistair Hunt of New Zealand in the Davis Cup Asia-Oceania Group-I second round match was deferred till Saturday due to waterlogging in the court after a heavy
shower on Thursday afternoon.

The match was originally slated to start at 12.30 pm, but it started raining as the players came on to the court.

Match referee Nao Kawate of Japan undertook an inspection at 2.30 pm and decided to postpone the match.

The match will now be held on Saturday at 10:00 am, followed by the doubles, in which Hunt is slated to feature again.

According to Davis Cup rules, there has to be a gap of one and a half hours between two matches if a player features in both.

Earlier, India took the lead over New Zealand when Leander Paes defeated Mark Nielsen 6-1, 7-6, 6-2.
