Humpy is world's
youngest Grandmaster
India's teenage sensation Koneru Humpy became the world's youngest Grandmaster when she settled for a quick draw against International Master Peter Luckas of Hungary in the tenth and final
round in the Elekes Memorial Grandmaster chess tournament in Hungary on Monday.
Needing only a half point to achieve her third Grandmaster norm, the 15-year-old chess prodigy, who was sole leader on Sunday with seven points, opened with Queen Indian Open Defence and agreed for a quick draw in 12 moves. In the process, she swelled her overnight tally of seven points to finish the tournament with 7.5 points.
With the third GM norm, Humpy, aged 15 years, one
month and 27 days, becomes the world's youngest Women Grandmaster to achieve full Grandmaster status, beating the record of her idol Judith Polgar, who achieved the feat at 15 years, four
months and 27 days.
On Sunday, Humpy had emerged the sole leader, with seven points, at the end of the ninth round.
In her ninth round match, Humpy, who has an Elo rating of 2486, beat International Master Danner Georg of Austria in 41moves.
Following Humpy in second place was International Master Postny Evegney, with 6 points.
Playing with white pieces in the Bogo Indian Defence, Humpy maintained a slight advantage in the opening phase of the game. She played her queen side rook to e1 square in move 18 and planned a combination in the 20th move by playing ef5 to open e file against blacks queen at e7 resulting a minor piece on the 27th move. With an extra piece she won the game comfortably in 41 moves after having an exchange of queens.
In the eighth round, humpy won against Grandmaster Horvath Csaba of Hungary in 39 moves with black pieces in queens Indian Defence.
The Elekes memorial tournament is a 11-round Grandmaster tournament with an average rating of 2437.
