Rosset through but Fererro falls in Swiss Open

Marc Rosset kept alive hopes of a home victory in the ATP Swiss Open with a 7-5 7-6 victory over Romania's Andrei Pavel in the second round on Thursday.

Rosset's chances were given an added boost when second seed Juan Carlos Ferrero became the latest favourite to fall, losing 5-7 6-4 6-3 to fellow Spaniard David Sanchez as just three of the top eight seeds made it through to the quarter-finals.

Rosset, the only Swiss left in the tournament, won a fiercely contested first set, only for Pavel -- who knocked out Wimbledon finalist David Nalbandian on Wednesday -- to force the second set to a tie break, which Rosset won 7-1.

Tournament favourite Ferrero was eliminated despite taking the opening set as Sanchez fought back bravely to overhaul his highly-rated compatriot.

Earlier, Argentine Gaston Gaudio also had to battle to beat unseeded Mikhail Youzhny of Russia 7-6 6-4.

Eighth seed Alex Corretja continued his progress by defeating fellow Spaniard Felix Mantilla 6-4 6-4.
