Seles comfortable with fading hopes

Monica Seles saw another chance of grabbing a first Wimbledon title slip from her grasp on Tuesday but said she will press on towards her goal of picking up one more grand slam title before calling it quits.

The 28-year-old American lost to Justine Henin 7-5 7-6 on Centre Court in the quarter-final in her ninth shot at the Wimbledon crown.

"She just played the key points better than I did, both sets, that's why she came out the winner today," she said of her Belgian opponent. "This is her favourite surface and she played a wonderful match."

"I think I could have been less error-prone. But Justine was just to good out there today," she added.

Asked if a Wimbledon title may now be unreachable, Seles forced a smile.

"Oh, yeah, definitely that could be the case. I'm fine with that," she said. "I know I gave it the best shot that I could, and that's, I guess, the best that I can do."

From 1990 to 1993, Seles won the Australian and French Open titles three times each, also taking home two U.S. Open titles.

She was ranked number one in the world when, in 1993, her all-conquering career was cut short when she was stabbed by a fanatical fan of Steffi Graf's in Hamburg, forcing her out of the game for two years.

With 53 singles titles under her belt, including nine grand slams, Seles has said she wants one more big win before retiring from tennis.

"I really want to add any grand slam titles but obviously Wimbledon even more so, because I have never won it," she said.

Seles said Tuesday's loss would not encourage her to call it quits.

"That doesn't cross my mind -- retirement -- after a match like this," she said. "I'm just more disappointed about the match at this stage."
