Punjab to take on a confident Goa

Both teams are well-balanced with a blend of good defenders and speedy strikers. Though Punjab has the advantage of having played their first round matches and the quarter-final league matches here, Goa is expected to nose ahead with their all-round strength.

But the Goans are wary of Punjab's power game.

Goan coach Norbert Gonsalvez, a former India and Salgaocar player, said "We were defensive in the quarter-final league match against Manipur as we were content with second spot in the group. Also, we wanted Bengal to be our semifinal opponent because Punjab plays power game with robust style."

However, the coach quickly brushed aside suggestions that the result of that match was pre-determined.

He said though Punjab was a strong side, his team held a good chance against them. "We have a good team and are confident that we can subdue Punjab".

Goa have four players from the Sesa Football Academy and their custodian Paul Fernandes is the reserve keeper of Dempo Sports Club.

Goa, who have come through some real close matches, showed a lot of character to remain focussed despite the controversies of overage players and rigging. Goans had a plan for each and every team as they went past fancied teams to reach the final.

The Goan attack is spearheaded by the tall and lanky Irinio Fernandes. Assisting him upfront are Meiton Fernandes, Bernardo Pires, Joe Rodrigues and Renold d'Souza.

The defence that did not allow Bengal to score in the semi-final also looks solid. Goan defence will be fully tested in the final as unlike Bengal, who rely on short passes, Punjab play with high passes.

Punjab also have a good frontline, capable of mounting fast and speedy raids on the rival citadel. The attack, comprising Sarabjit Singh, Mandeep Singh, Ashok Kumar and Kularjeet Singh, is well supported by the midfield.

The defenders led by captain M Pal Singh and wingers would be hoping to stop the nippy Goans using their height to good effect.

The match officials may also come under the scanner as the Goan coach had earlier complained about the poor standard of refereeing.
