Top players for first
FIDE World Cup
The stage is set for the first FIDE World Cup Grand Prix, which takes place in Dubai, from April 3 to 8.
World champion Ruslan Ponomariov leads the challenge in the first of five Grand Prix events. The other events will be held in Russai in May, India in July, Croatia in August and Brazil in September.
The event will be runs as follows: The first round will be a 16 x 16 knock-out and the second and third rounds will be open play between the 16 players left from the first round. Four players will qualified for the semi-final stage based on their results in the first three rounds. April 7 will be a rest day.
Those not making the last four stage will play for the fifth to 16th positions in another room in the Dubai Chess Club. They will continue to do so the following day. After the semi-finals two players will go on to compete in the UAE Grand Prix final, the losing semi-finalists will rejoin the other players playing at the same time as this final to play for third and fourth in another room in the Dubai Chess Club.
