Corus Wars Viswanathan Anand 15th FIDE World Chess champion. Born in Madras, 11 December, 1969. Introduced to the game by his mother at the age of six. Won the National sub-junior in 1983, the National Junior in 1984 and the Senior National Championship in 1986. Became India's first Grandmaster (GM) in December 1987 Defeated Spain's Alexei Shirov 3.5-0.5 at Tehran, Iran in a six-game final to become the 15th FIDE World Chess champion in 2000.
