Stoliarov shocks Vinciguerra
Unheralded Russian Andrei Stoliarov added another scalp to the list of casualties in the Gold Flake Indian Open by eliminating sixth seed Andreas Vinciguerra of Sweden 6-1, 6-3 in the second round on Thursday.
Stoliarov subdued his rival in just over an hour to storm into the quarter-finals of the $400,000 tournament.
Vinciguerra became the sixth seed to go out and joined top seeds Magnus Norman of Sweden and
Franco Squillari of Argentina on the sidelines.
Seventh seed Markus Hantschk of Germany and eighth seed Jiri Vanek of Czech Republic were
also first round casualties. Zimbabwe's Byron Black fell in the second.
French third seed Cedric Pioline is the only seed to have made the last eight so far.
Stoliarov dominated Vinciguerra with big groundstrokes from the baseline to set up a quarterfinal
against Peter Wessels. The Dutchman beat Russian Mikhail Youzhny 6-0, 6-4.
The Russian cashed in on Vinciguerra's many unforced errors for two breaks of serve in the first set,
racing 5-0 ahead before the Swede could win his first game.
Stoliatrov broke for 4-3 in the second set and raced away with the match.
"I didn't make any mistakes at all today. I had expected a tougher match, but everything just fell my
way," Stoliarov said.
"But to be fair, Vinciguerra made a lot of errors."
Vinciguerra said: "It just wasn't my day. Stoliarov played a good match. He deserved to win."
