Humpy wins World junior chessIndia's Woman Grandmaster Koneru Humpy won the World Junior chess crown after defeating Paehtz Elizabeth of Germany the 13th and final round in Athens on Wednesday. Humpy, who was in second place after the penultimate round on Tuesday, finished with 9.5 points, the same as overnight leader WGM Zhao Zue of China, but won the title on a better progressive scores difference.[See final standings below.] Zhao Zue, who was on nine points overnight, would have won the title had she won her last match, but she was suprisingly held by Kosintseva Nadezhda of Russia. Double WGM norm holder Aarthie Ramaswamy and S Meenakshi finished with eight points and were placed joint ninth. Aarthie defeated Yelena Gorlin in her last match while Meenakshi lost to Sopiko Khukhashvili. Peter Acs of Hungary won the boys' crown, tallying 10 points. Merab Agunashvili of Georgia and Levon Aronian of Armenia tied for second place with 9.5 points. On Tuesday, Humpy bounced back into contention with a classy victory over Woman International Master Zamina Olga of Russia in the 12th and penultimate round. Humpy, with 8.5 points, jointly held the second position along with Woman FIDE Masters Inga Charkhalashvili of Georgia and Kosintseva Nadezhda of Russia. Meanwhile, WGM Zhao Zue of China continued her brilliant run and shot into sole lead, with 9 points, defeating Armenia's Lilit Mkrtchian with black pieces. Lilit, Gu Xiaobing of China and WFM Dzagnidze Nana of Georgia were in fourth to sixth places, with 8 points, while WIM S Meenakshi was in joint seventh spot with four others, on 7.5 points. Double WGM norm holder Aarthie Ramaswamy took her tally to 7 points by defeating Jurkiewicz Katarzy of Poland and Asian Junior girls' champion M Kasturi defeated L Zahira to move to 5 points. In the boys' section, the lead continued to change hands, with GMs Levon Aronian of Armenia and Peter Acs of Hungary emerging on top with comprehensive victories in the 12th round. Aronian put it across top seed and overnight sole leader Ni Hua of China in a scintillating display of technical and tactical prowess while Acs scored a hard-fought win over seventh seed IM Sargissian Gabriel of Armenia. IM Tejas Bakre emerged India's best bet, outclassing Johan Alvarez of Venezuela to take his score to 7.5 points. Bakre is in joint 11th position and a win in the final round will give him a top ten finish. The other Indian, P Magesh Chandran confirmed his 12-round IM norm despite a loss against sixth seed IM Milton Kamil of Poland. Magesh with a career-best rating performance of 2515 points remained on 7 points. The other two M R Venkatesh (6.5) and K Ratnakaran (6) scored over Zenklusen Rico (5.5) of Switzerland and Sam Collins of Ireland respectively. Girls - Final Standings (13 rounds)
