Fazaluddin, Nirupama in quartersNirupama Vaidyanathan and Yuka Yoshida of Japan moved into the doubles quarter-finals at the $100,000 G H Bronx Classic, being played in Bronx, the United States. The pair lost the first set but rallied splendidly to get the better of Dawn Buth of the United States and Natalie Grandin of South Africa 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 in their first round match. They will face the winner of the match between second seeds Lubomira Bacheva of Bulgaria / Laurence Courtois of Belgium and Vanessa Henke of Germany / Byanne Stewart of Australia in the quarter-final. In the men's doubles at the same challenger, Syed Fazaluddin, parternering with Cedric Kauffmann of France, also entered the quarter-finals. The duo got a walkover from the third seeded American pair of Brandon Hawk and Robert Kendrick in their first round match. They face unseeded Kelly Gullett of the United States and Bobby Kokavec of Canada. At the $10,000 Thailand Satellite in Nonthaburi, fifth seed Rushmi Chakravarti was upset by Chathida Thimjapo of Thailand 1-6, 1-6 in the second round. The defeat by a not-so-highly rated player was surprising as the Indian had earlier defeated junior Wimbledon champion Angelique Widjaja of Indonesia in the first round. In the doubles, top seeds Rushmi Chakravarti and Sai Jayalakshmi entered the quarter-finals, defeating the Japanese pair of Shizu Katsumi and Chie Nagano 6-3, 3-6, 6-3. They now will face the Taiwanese pair of Hsiao-Han Chao and Chia-Jung Chuang, who came through from the qualifiers. Another Indian pair of Sheethal Goutham and Liza Pereira lost in the first round to the Japanese pair of Chisayo Ito and Akiko Kinebuchi 0-6, 4-6.
