Germany finish fifth in men's hockey

Germany avenged their preliminary league match loss to Great Britain in grand style, whipping their conquerors 4-0 in the play-off match for fifth and sixth positions on Friday.

The Germans, whose defeat in the concluding match of Group A saw them fail to make it to the semis, and at the same time allowed defending Olympic and World champions The Netherlands, who were beaten by Pakistan in an earlier match, to claw back into the last four stage, rode roughshod over the British right from the start.

They should have been at least three goals up within the first ten minutes itself but their forwards Tibor Weissenborn, Bjoern Michael and Christophy Bechmann failed to score when ideally palced. However, they did find the mark in the 27th minute through Michael froma field goal and from then on the flood gates were left open.

Oliver Domke made it 2-0 four minutes from half-time before Bechmann and Tibor Weissenborn could complete the rour in the 58th and 62 minutes.

Great Britain finshed sixth.
