Davenport wins Australian OpenSecond seed Lindsay Davenport proved too good for defending champion Martina Hingis to win her first Australian Open title on Saturday. She defeated the world No.1 6-1, 7-5. Davenport had things her way as she raced away to the first set and then established a 5-1 lead in the second. Hingis, a winner at Melbourne since last three years, looked like staging a grand rally as she levelled the scores at 5-all, but Davenport cut short the recovery to hold serve and then break for the match. Davenport improved her record to 3-0 in Grand Slam finals and beat Hingis for the second time in a final after winning the US Open against the Swiss teenager in 1998. Fifth seeds Rick Leach of the United States and Ellis Ferreira of South Africa beat eighth seeds Wayne Black of Zimbabwe and Andrew Kratzmann of Australia in the men's doubles final 6-4, 3-6, 6-3, 3-6, the match lasting four hours and twenty minutes.
