Lee brothers and Symonds for triangular

Brett Lee has joined one-day allrounder and 26-year-old brother Shane in Australia’s 13-man squad for the first four matches of the Carlton and United one-day series, beginning on Sunday in Brisbane. If both selected, they will become the second pair of brothers in the current team after the Waugh twins.

Lee made a tremendous impact in his two Tests against India and with his impressive control, could slot straight in to the one-day team.

The one shock exclusion from Australia’s squad for the forthcoming series is left-handed South Australian batsman Darren Lehmann. Lehmann hit the winning runs in the World Cup final and was part of Australia’s most recent one-day squads in Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe, but now finds himself on the outer.

Lehmann, 29, has played 60 matches and has a batting average of 32.48, with two hundreds. He did not bat in any of the three one-day matches in Zimbabwe in October and his place in the line-up will be taken by either Damien Martyn or Andrew Symonds.

Australia have left out Michael Slater, Greg Blewett and Justin Langer from the side which won the third Test, three batsmen who form the top three in Australia’s Test batting order but are not considered one-day players. The bridge the Australian selectors created between the Test and one-day team more than two years ago with the aim of winning last year’s World Cup is narrowing, however. Michael Bevan is Australia’s only true one-day specialist and there are likely to be only three faces not seen in the Test team this season.

Missing from the squad which won the World Cup are Lehmann, allrounders Tom Moody and Brendan Julian, who are both injured, as well as seamer Paul Reiffel, who retired in July. The two inclusions who were not part of the World Cup squad are Andrew Symonds, 24, and Brett Lee, 23.

Symonds, a big-hitting batsman and brilliant fielder, made a hundred against India for the Prime Minister’s XI and is a potential star.
