NZ beat Windies by seven wickets

Daniel Vettori and Stephen Fleming excelled with ball and bat respectively to enable New Zealand beat the West Indies by seven wickets in the second one-day international at Taupo today.

Vettori claimed career-best one-day figures of 4 for 24 while Fleming scored 59 in 88 balls to put the home team 2-0 up in the five-match series.

Put in to bat after a rain delayed start which forced the match to be reduced to 42 overs per side, the West Indies started badly, losing the wicket of Sherwin Campbell of the first ball and never really recovered after that. A stubborn 69 by Jimmy Adams, who had useful partnerships with Shivnaraine Chanderpaul (26) and Ricardo Powell (35) enabled them to put up a face-saving 192 in 41.3 overs as Vettori went on the rampage claiming four wickets and holding two catches.

Openers Craig Spearman and Nathan Astle then led New Zealand's charge, putting on 56 runs for the first wicket in seven overs when Astle was caught by Merv Dillon off the bowling off Jimmy Adams for 32. Skipper Fleming (59 not out) then stepped in and together with Spearman (42) and Chris Cairns (27 not out) saw the home team score 194 in 35.4 overs and warp up the match.

Craig McMillian (13) was the other Kiwi wicket to fall.
