Klusener given four match ban

Lance Klusener was given a four-match ban on Wednesday. However, the sentence has been suspended for three months, enabling the South African all-rounder to play in this month's series against India.

'Zulu', as Klusener is affectionately called in the cricket world, was suspended after being involved in a quarrel with Zimbabwe's Guy Whittall during the last one-day game in Port Elizabeth.

Indian cricketer Hanumant Singh, the match referee, also fined Whittall 30 per cent of his match fee, suspended for a month, for his role in the squabble.

The clash occurred soon after Klusener dismissed Whittall, leading to an angry exchange of words. Dave Kelly, Zimbabwe's manager, made an official complaint against Zulu after the match.

Singh ruled that Klusener had breached International Cricket Council rules when he 'verbally abused Whittall by using crude and abusive language and engaged in unbecoming conduct which could bring the game of cricket into disrepute,' a statement issued by the United Cricket Board of South Africa, said.

'He has been suspended from participating in two Test matches and two one-day internationals, both of which have been suspended for a period of three months,' the UCBSA statement added.
