England v South Africa at East London

• This match was England's 306th and South Africa's 182nd in LOIs.

• This match was the 21st meeting between the two sides.

• The 38 run partnership between Jonty Rhodes and Lance Klusener was the best for the seventh wicket at this venue. It betters the previous best of 36 runs between South African Cronje and Mark Boucher against the West Indies on 24-1-1999.

• Mark Alleyne (53 & 3-55) became the only third English all-rounder to score a fifty and take 3 wickets in the same match in LOIs. Ian Botham (53 & 4-31 v Australia at Sydney, 5-3-1992) and Graeme Hick (91 & 3-41 v Australia at Melbourne, 101-1995) were the others to do so.

• The previous best all-round performance by an Englishman against South Africa was by Hick when he scored 55 and captured 2-38 at Bloemfontein on 11-1-1996. Alleyne's all-round performance was the third best by an all-rounder against South Africa after Sri Lankan Kumara Dharmasena (69* and 3-46) at Lahore on 6-11-1997 and Zimbabwean Neil Johnson (76 & 3-27) at Chelmsford on 29-5-1999.

• By winning with just two balls to spare, South Africa recorded its third narrowest win in LOIs. Its narrowest win remain as the last ball victories against the West Indies at Johannesburg on 22-1-1999 and against New Zealand at Napier on 26-3-1999.

• South Africa had beaten England with 8 balls to spare at The Oval on 21-5-1998.

• Only twice before England had lost a match off the last ball. Australia had won at Sharjah on 24-3-1985 while the West Indies had won at Kingston on 3-3-1990.

• The two wicket win by South Africa equals its narrowest victory in terms of wickets in LOIs. On three other occasions South Africa had won by this same margin - against Australia at Faridabad on 25-10-1996; against the West Indies at Johannesburg on 22-1-1999 and against New Zealand at Napier on 26-3-1999.

• Alleyne was winning his maiden man of the match award of his career in his 8th match.
