Hyderabad hold Punjab

Mohammad Azharuddin stole the day's honours as Hyderabad earned an honourable draw against Punjab in their Group B Ranji Trophy Super League match at Mohali on Tuesday.

The former India captain celebrated his 37th birthday in style, scoring an unbeaten 63 as Hyderabad, 246 runs behind on the first innings after being been shot out for 117, finished with 244 for three off 93 overs in their second innings to pick three points from the fixture. Punjab got five points.

Azharuddin defied the Punjab bowlers for almost three-and-a- half hours, facing 153 balls, as Hyderabad crusied to safety.

Resuming at 15 without loss on the fourth and final morning, Hyderabad started well with openers P Satwalkar (53) and A Nandakishore (35) putting on 89 runs off 31.5 overs. Then Azharuddin and Vinay Kumar (67) added 104 runs for the third wicket to earn a well-deserved draw.

Punjab captain Vikram Rathour tried eight bowlers but none could unsettle the Hyderabad batsmen.
