ITI shock East Bengal

Indian Telephone Industries shocked Kingfisher East Bengal 1-0 in the fifth National Football League in Bangalore on Tuesday.

The Calcutta outfit, which had a sizzling start to their campaign, defeating Manaksia Tollygunge Agragami at home, tasted their first defeat in the tournament in which they were twice runners-up.

Encouraged by the boisterous home crowd, ITI surged ahead in the eighth minute thanks to a superb goal by R Rawath, off a neat pass from their Nigerian import George Ekeh.

It was ITI's first victory in the league, after their goalless draw in the opening encounter against State Bank of Travancore.

Zee Churchill Brothers held

In another match, State Bank of Travancore held last year's runners-up Zee Churchill Brothers to a goalless draw at the Nehru stadium in Fatorda, Goa, on Tuesday.

In a fast paced game, Churchill failed to do justice to their rating despite having an edge in both the halves.

Following the draw, Churchill open their account with one point from two outings, having been beaten by debutants Vasco Sports Club in their opening match. State Bank have two points from two drawn matches.

Churchill made few good forays into the bank citadel but faltered at crucial moments. Striker Francis Silveira was totally off-colour and missed at least three good chances.
