Sports minister calls meeting on April 27

Union Sports and Youth Affairs minister Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa has called a meeting of officials of the Board of Control for Cricket in India, past and present Indian captains and some administrators involved with the game on April 27, to discuss this match-fixing issue.

Prominent players invited for the meeting, scheduled to be held at the Jawaharlal Nehru stadium, at 1100 hrs, are Sunil Gavaskar, Bishen Singh Bedi, Ajit Wadekar, Kapil Dev, Mohammad Azharuddin and Saurav Ganguly.

The minister said his ministry will decide after the meeting whether to hand over the match-fixing case to the Central Bureau of Investigation or any other investigating agency.

Dhindsa said he had a ten-minute meeting with BCCI secretery J Y Lele during which he asked for a performance report of the Indian team on the Australian tour and the recent series against South Africa.

He said the government has taken a very serious view of the whole issue. ''We want to get into the bottom of the whole murky affair.''

The minister also disclosed that three past presidents and secretaries, apart from the present officials of the BCCI, have been invited for the meeting.
