Kasparov triumphs

Garry Kasparov won the Top of the World Challenge, beating Viswanathan Anand 1-1, 2-0, via a tie-break at the Concert Hall of Kopavogur, Raykjavik, on Sunday.

The Russian ace proved too good for the Indian who was not his usual self in the tie-break games. He lost the first blitz game on time in 42 moves after reaching a draw position. In the second, Anand went for a knight sacrifice but Kasparov nullified it.

Kasparov had beaten A. Wojtkiewicz 1.5-0.5 in the semi-final.

Anand and Kasparov were tied 1-1 at the end of two rapid games. In the first, Kasparov was too good with the black pieces but Anand did well to draw the game in 41 moves. He had a bishop and pawn against Kasparov's rook.

In game two, Anand played the French defence as black and equalised after move 20. Kasparov was able to draw the game after 29 moves with a repetition of moves.

Final: Garry Kasparov (Russia) beat Vishwanathan Anand (India) 1-1, 2-0.

Semi-finals: Anand (Ind) bt M. Petursson (Isd) 1.5-0.5, Kasparov (Rus) bt A. Wojtkiewicz (Pol) 1.5-0.5.
