Mumbai, Karnataka win by an inningsThe spin duo of Rajesh Pawar and Nilesh Kulkarni spun Mumbai to an innings victory over Maharashtra on the penultimate day of the four-day West Zone Ranji Trophy league match at the Wankhede Stadium in Bombay today. Mumbai won by an innings and 11 runs to get eight points. Maharashtra did not get any. Rajesh Pawar got another five-wicket haul to finish the match with 11 wickets. He bagged 5 for 49 in the second innings, while his partner Nilesh Kulkarni had figures of 5 for 44. Maharashtra, facing a deficit of 159 runs in the first innings, started their second innings on a confident note with openers Surendra Bhave and Dheeraj Jadhav negotiating the pace bowling of Mhambrey, Saxena and Kannan without any difficulty. The two were unseparated at lunch with the score reading a healthy 66 for no loss. However, after lunch, the spin duo, bowling in tandem, wrecked havoc among the Maharashtra batsmen to bowl them out for 148. Earlier in the morning, Mumbai's last pair added 10 more runs in 4.1 overs before Mhambrey was out, caught at second slip by Kale off Siddique. For Maharashtra, Siddique was the most successful bowler, capturing seven wickets for 69 runs.

Hyderabad: A fighting 146-run stand for the third wicket between skipper Mohammad Azharuddin (77) and Nanda Kishore (65) helped hosts Hyderabad gain a vital one-run first innings lead against Andhra on the penultimate day of the four-day South Zone Ranji Trophy league match today. At draw of stumps, Hyderabad were 381 for five, with former captain M V Sridhar and Vanka Pratap batting on 17 and 10 runs respectively. Andhra were bowled out for 380 yesterday. Hyderabad, resuming from their overnight total of 163 for no loss, saw century maker V V S Laxman out for 104 runs, while Daniel Manohar, the other overnight batsman, was out for 72 runs, which had six hits to the fence. The third wicket pair of Azharuddin and Nanda Kishore added 146 runs in 196 minutes before Azhar was bowled by medium pacer N Madhukar. Azhar's knock of 77 included five hits to the fence. Nanda Kishore scored 65 which was laced with five fours. Brief scores: Andhra 380; Hyderabad 381 for 5 in 146 overs (V V S Laxman 104, Daniel Manohar 72, Nandakishore 65, Mohammad Azharuddin 77; Ramkishen 2 for 151, Madhukar 2 for 77). Bangalore: Spinner Anand Yalvigi (5 for 43) bowled Karnataka to an innings and 179-run victory over Goa with a day to spare after Anand Katti (109 not out) and David Johnson (101 not out) scored unbeaten maiden centuries in the Ranji Trophy league match at the M Chinnaswamy stadium today. Goa were shot out for 136 in an extended game in the fifth over, with injured captain Prashant Kakode not coming out to bat. Karnataka had declared at 504 for seven in reply to Goa's score of 189 in the first innings. As Goa had lost eight wickets at the scheduled time of closure, the umpires extended the game by half-an- hour. For Goa, acting captain Rajesh Naik, who was the top scorer with 34, was the last batsman out in the second innings. Nitin Kalekar, who remained unbeaten on 20, added 37 runs with Rajesh Naik for the ninth wicket. G N Umesh was the other successful bowler for Karnataka with figures of two for 29. Karnataka collected eight points to take its tally to 16 from two matches, having beaten Kerala by an innings earlier. For Goa it was its second successive defeat. UNI
