Hockey players unhappy with new foot rule

The world's leading field hockey players have continued their criticism of the new rules aimed at speeding up the sport.

The captains and vice-captains of the world's top men's and women's team have accused the Federation of International Hockey of forcing players to put their bodies on the line in an effort to raise the sport's profile.

A statement released by the captains said a new foot rule was contributing to more injuries. They also called for stronger penalties for tackles from behind.

"This has now created confusion among players, umpires, paying spectators and the watching television audience,'' the statement said.

Australian women's coach Ric Charlesworth has led a series of attacks by coaches about the new rules, which cover all unintentional foot and ball contact.

FIH president Juan Angel Calzado has conceded fine-tuning of the rule was needed and further interpretation would be provided once the ruling board met on the issue.

The men's team captains have questioned the "decision to trial of the rule at one of the most prestigious tournaments and a showpiece of the international game".

"The rule benefits a more defensive approach and creates less clear-cut goalscoring opportunities,'' they said.

Under the new rule, the referee will allow play to continue.
