Karnataka eves on the verge of cricketing revival

Men's cricket, down in Karnataka, is on a high with a plethora of players from the state making the national team.

And now, apparently, it is the turn of women's cricket, with the Karnataka Ladies Cricket Association poised for a revival.

The association, which had been mostly inactive for the past few years due to lack of sponsorship, was also struggling with some organisational problems.

Association joint secretary and former national captain Shanta Rangaswamy said the problems were a good way towards being sorted out, and the women's league will be shortly revived. The tournament is likely to be held in the second week of September, Rangaswamy said.

Since the association has no qualified coaches at its disposal, the servies of the Imtiaz Ahmed Cricket Academy has been sought to conduct a summer camp and train talented youngsters, free of cost, each year.

"The tie up with IACA is initialy for a period of five years. This year, it would also sponsor three tournaments -- inter schools, inter collegiate and the state league, with the inter collegiate tournament commencing in August", Rangaswamy said.

Apart from these, the association would also organise Sheela Sridhar Rangaswamy open tournament and an inter district tournament. Teams from Bangalore, Mysore, Bellary, Belgaum and Kolar were expected to participate in the inter-district tournament.

The association is now on the lookout for a sponsor or sponsors who can adopt the state women's team for the next five years.

As part of the development scheme, a three-match series between the top 25 women cricketers of the state for the Crown Events Trophy, sponsored by the IACA, would be played from tomorrow.
