Bangladesh go for Eddie Barlow

Bangladesh will appoint former South African cricketer Eddie Barlow as the country's coach for the next four years, Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) officials said today.

''We have agreed in principle to appoint Barlow as our new coach,'' BCB president Saber Hossain Chowdhury said.

Barlow is likely to take up his new job after the BCB meets on August 6 to approve his his appointment.

Chowdhury did not disclose the terms agreed with Barlow.

Barlow will succeed former West Indian opening batsman Gordon Greenidge who was sacked during the recent World Cup following a row with board officials over team selection.

Bangladesh beat Pakistan and Scotland in their maiden World Cup.

Barlow, 59, played 30 Tests and scored 2,561 runs which included six centuries and 15 half-centuries. He also took 40 wickets for an average 34.05 runs with the best figures of five for 85.

Chowdhury said: ''We were in a hurry to appoint a new coach as Bangladesh are scheduled to play one-day internationals, three-day and four-day matches with the national and ''A'' sides of different Test countries at home and abroad starting from September this year.''

The matches are part of Bangladesh's route to achieving Test status as laid down by the International Cricket Council (ICC).

BCB officials said Bangladesh's performance in the World Cup had advanced its case for becoming the 10th Test-playing nation.

They said the West Indies would tour Bangladesh in September, England ''A'' would tour in November while the Sri Lankan and Australian ''A'' teams were expected early next year.

Bangladesh will tour India and Pakistan at the end of this year and early next year.
