Kaptan Singh strikes gold at Asian triathlon

Kaptan Singh of the Services brought laurels to India by winning the gold in the 30 years and above age group at the eighth Asian Triathlon Championship in Sokcho, South Korea, on July 11.

According to a statement by the Indian Triathlon Federation in Madras, Kaptan completed the gruelling Olympic distance of 1.5 km swim, 40 km cycling and 10 km running in 2 hours, 10 minutes and 24 seconds.

He timed 24 minutes and 47 seconds in the swimming event; one hour 10 minutes and 12 seconds in cycling, and took 35 minutes and 25 seconds to complete the run.

However, it was a disappointing performance by the Indian girls, with Sangini Devi of Manipur finishing only sixth in the junior women's elite category, timing 2 hours 37 minutes and 43 seconds, and C Pughazhlendi of Tamil Nadu placing 12th in the junior elite category, clocking 2 hrs 13 minutes and 29 secs.

Another Tamil Nadu triathlete T R Haridharan fared even worse, placing 24th in the men's elite category, clocking 2 hours 10 minutes and 23 seconds.

Triathletes from Japan, China, Chinese Taipei, Korea, India, Malaysia, Singapore, Macau, Kazhakhastan, Uzbekistan, Hong Kong and Thailand participated in the competition.
