Anil Kumar equals Milkha's 200m mark

Anil Kumar of the Services equalled 'Flying Sikh' Milkha Singh's 39-year-old 200 metres record, thanks to a decision of the Amateur Athletics Federation of India, even as Shakti Singh of the Railways stole the thunder with a rare hat-trick, winning the discuss and shot put events for the third consecutive time, in the third international athletics circuit meet in Bangalore today.

Anil Kumar clocked 21.06 seconds (electronic) in the 200 metres, which was nearly one second more than the record established by Milkha Singh at Lahore, in 1960. However, AAFI secretary general Lalit Bhanot, after a meeting with time-keepers, decided to ratify the time as record-equalling performance.

"It was decided to slice off one second as there were no electronic timing devices in 1960. It has been decided to treat the timing of Anil Kumar as a record-equalling performance," an AAFI spokesman said over telephone.

Earlier this year, Paramjeet Singh had smashed the record of the 'Flying Sikh' in the 400 metres.

Shakthi Singh (38) won the discuss throw and the shot put for the third time on the trot.

Kenya's domination over the middle distance continued, with rivals coming nowhere near them in performances.

Other notable performances came from 19-year-old Sunita Kumari and Lijo David, both of the Railways, and G G Pramila of Karnataka.
