M L Jaisimha passes away

Former Test cricketer M L Jaisimha died of lung cancer at his residence this afternoon.

He was 60. He is survived by his wife, two sons and two grandsons.

All his family members were at his bed side when he breathed his last.

The legendary cricketer was born in Secunderabad, on March 3, 1939. He made his debut in the Ranji Trophy in 1954-55. In his first match, against Andhra, he scored 90 runs and claimed three wickets for 51 runs.

The stylish batsman, who was celebrated for his straight drives, played his first Test against England and scored eight runs in both the innings.

He played 39 Tests and scored 2056 runs, with an average of 30.68 runs, his highest being 129 against England in 1963-64. He claimed nine wickets, giving away 829 runs.

Jaisimha was instrumental in India's first victory against the mighty West Indies, led by Sir Garfield Sobers, in the 1971 series. Incidentally, it was his last Test series.
