Caddick has SA reeling

Medium pacer Andy Caddick came up with a fine bowling performance to knock out South Africa's top order as England dominated play on the third morning of the third Test at Kingsmead today.

Caddick had figures of 3 for 12 as he reduced South Africa to 24-3.

At lunch the home team was 32-3.

England declared their first innings closed on their overnight score of 366 for 9.

All of Caddick's victims were caught behind by wicketkeeper Alec Stewart. He struck first in the sixth over when he removed Herschelle Gibbs for two, the batsman nicking a rising ball.

In his next over, he induced Jacques Kallis (0) to claim his 100th victim in Tests. Then followed the wicket of opener Gary Kirsten, who edged an angled delivery to Stewart.

Overnight rain delayed the start of play on the third day. And when play was set to resume, the regular ground rolled broke down and delayed the start further by almost and hour and a half.

Yesterday, Nasser Hussain made the third slowest century by an England batsman before South Africa's bowlers hit back on the second day of the Test.

The England captain was unbeaten on 146 in an England total of 366 for nine before bad light stopped play 16.2 overs early.

Earlier, England frittered away the advantage of a fourth-wicket stand of 156 between Hussain and Alec Stewart (95), losing five wickets for 26 runs on either side of tea.

Hussain batted for more than ten-and-a-half hours and faced 463 balls. He hit 17 fours. He reached his century after batting for 466 minutes and facing 343 balls. Only two batsmen have batted longer for England before reaching the three-figure mark. Peter Richardson took 488 minutes against South Africa in Johannesburg in 1956-57 while Clive Radley needed one minute less against New Zealand in Auckland in 1977-78.

Hussain played the anchor role on a second successive day as he posted his eighth Test hundred and his first since making 105 against South Africa at Lord's in 1998.
