Rutherford to coach Ireland

Former New Zealand captain Ken Rutherford was yesterday appointed coach of Ireland.

According to the Irish Cricket Union, Rutherford will coach the team till the 2001 ICC Trophy in Toronto from which Ireland will attempt to qualify for the 2003 World Cup finals in South Africa.

Rutherford, who played 56 Tests and 121 one-day internationals for the New Zealand, will take up assignment in spring and join the team for a pre-season six-nation tournament in Zimbabwe in April

"My main objective is simple: to take Ireland to the World Cup finals in South Africa," the 34-year-old said.
