North Zone claim Duleep Trophy

North Zone regained the Duleep Trophy by virtue of their first innings lead over West Zone, after the five-day final ended in a draw at the Eden Gardens in Calcutta today.

Resuming their second innings at the overnight score of 99 for two, after establishing a 101-run first innings lead, North were bundled out for 248 runs 73 minutes after the lunch break, with Pankaj Dharmani scoring a brilliant 93.

Set a near impossible target of 350 runs in 39 overs in their second innings, West were able to put up just 64 for five before play was called off without the completion of the mandatory overs.

North had assured themselves of the title for the 14th time after bundling out West for 367 yesterday. However, this morning West looked like staging a fightback as they reduced North to 149 for six. But Pankaj Dharmani and a stubborn tail dashed whatever hopes they may have entertained.

Zaheer Khan was the pick of the West bowlers. He captured four wickets for 76. Paras Mhambrey and Nilesh Kulkarni got three apiece.
