Kiwis win first Test against Windies

New Zealand pulled off one of the biggest upsets in cricket history when they came back strongly to beat the West Indies by nine wickets in the first Test at Hamilton today.

The victory - the fifth in 29 matches - was New Zealand's first in Tests over the West Indies for 13 years. It came after the tourists had ended the first day on 282 for one, thanks to a record 276-run opening stand between Sherwin Campbell and Adrian Griffith.

For the West Indies, it was their ninth straight Test loss away from home.

Chris Cairns was New Zealand's match-winner. He finished with a career-best haul of seven wickets for 27 runs as the tourists were dismissed for just 97 in their second innings. His bowling figures were the third-best in New Zealand Test history and gave him a 10-wicket haul in the match.

It left the Kiwis needing a paltry 70 runs to win, which they achieved for the loss of just one wicket.

The West Indies can now only square the two-match series with the final Test at Wellington on Boxing Day.
