North take lead despite Jaffer's 173 n.o

A defiant 173 not out by West Zone opener Wasim Jaffer couldn't prevent North Zone from taking a vital 101-run first innings lead on the fourth day of the Duleep Trophy final at the Eden Gardens, Calcutta, today.

After resuming at the overnight score of 237 for three, in reply to North's first innings total of 468, Jaffer defied the North attack and carried his bat through before West were all out for 367 a little before the tea break.

Jaffer was at the crease for 613 minutes during which he faced 431 balls and had 23 hits to the fence.

With a lead of 200 runs on a good batting track, and the possibility of an outright result remote, North are virtually assured of the Duleep Trophy for the 13th time.

In their second innings, North, after losing openers Ashutosh Dani (4) and Vikram Rathour (41), were 99 for two, with promising allrounder Reetinder Singh Sodhi on 40 and Pankaj Dharmani on 8 at the crease.

Robin Singh was the most successful bowler for North, claiming six wickets for 63 runs from 34 overs.

Play was called off without the completion of the stipulated 90 overs due to poor light.
