South Africa 253 for 6

A defiant 63 by Lance Klusener enabled South Africa score 253 for six wickets on the opening day of the second cricket Test against England South Africa at Port Elizabeth today. Keeping him company at close was Shaun Pollock on 1.

Left-arm spinner Phil Tufnell snapped up two wickets in the afternoon session to give England the upper hand.

Tufnell induced poor shots from South African skipper Hansie Cronje and Darryl Cullinan to reduce the home side to 157 for five at the interval.

Tufnell, who was left out of the side which lost the first Test in Johannesburg, exploited a turning pitch after South Africa had been put in to bat.

South Africa had gone to lunch at 78 for two but lost Herschelle Gibbs for 48 five overs after the restart when a suicidal single by Cullinan left both batsman stranded at the same end.

In Tufnell's next over Cronje slapped a rash drive into the hands of Andrew Flintoff at short extra-cover to leave South Africa reeling on 91 for four.

Cullinan put on 55 with Jonty Rhodes and looked set to repeat his century of the first Test. But he, too, was tempted down the wicket by Tufnell and was comfortably stumped for 58 by Alec Stewart when he was beaten by the width and turn of the spinner.
