This match was India's 409th & Sri Lanka's 306th in LOIs. This match was the 62nd meeting between the two sides. Both EKG Wijewardena and G Silva were appearing in their first LOI match as umpire. Sachin Tendulkar's 120 was his 23rd hundred of his career in 221 matches. He has now scored 42 hundreds for his country which includes the 19 Test hundreds. It was his fifth LOI hundred as a skipper - the maximum scored by any LOI captain. Indian Azharuddin and Sri Lankan Arjuna Ranatunga have scored four hundreds each. Tendulkar's 120 was the second highest individual score by a visiting batsman in Sri Lanka. The highest still belongs to Tendulkar when he scored 128 against Sri Lanka at Colombo (Premadasa) on 7-7-1998. It was also the second highest individual score made at this venue after the 127* by Aravinda deSilva against Zimbabwe on 3-9-1996. It was the only second hundred by a visiting captain in Sri Lanka. The previous hundred was also scored by Tendulkar when he made 110 against Sri Lanka at Colombo (Premadasa) on 28-8-1996 - his first match as captain. It was his fifth hundred against Sri Lanka. Now only Pakistani Saeed Anwar has scored more - six hundreds. At the end of his innings he took his run tally to exactly 1500 against Sri Lanka in 41 matches. Now only fellow Indian Mohd. Azharuddin (1831 runs in 52 matches) and Pakistani Salim Malik (1573 in 53) have scored more against Sri Lanka. He surpassed the previous tally of Azharuddin who had 965 runs in 26 matches. Sourav Ganguly (85) playing in his 110th match and 105th innings reached exactly 4000 runs. By reaching this milestone in just 105 innings he becomes the fifth quickest in LOI history to do so and is now in the joint sixth position among batsman who did so in least LOI matches. He incidentally becomes the sixth Indian and the 34th batsman in LOI history to do so. Ganguly in the meanwhile has also taken his tally to runs to 1001 against Sri Lanka in 21 matches. He becomes the third Indian after Azhar and Tendulkar to do so. Sanath Jayasuriya's wicket of Sourav Ganguly takes his tally to 161 which equals the Sri Lankan record for the maximum wicket aggregates held by Muthiah Muralitharan. Jayasuriya was playing in his 187th match, while Muralitharan was appearing in his 119th match. Chaminda Vaas' bowling figures of 7-0-59-0 was the second worst bowling performance by a Sri Lankan bowler in LOIs for a seven-over spell. The worst still remains with Ashanka Gurusinha who had figures of 7-0-63-2 against Pakistan at Sharjah on 4-2-1993. India's total equals the highest ever total at this venue which was also 296-4 by Sri Lanka against Bangladesh in the Asia Cup on 22-7-1997. During his innings of 71 Jayasuriya became the fourth Sri Lankan, after Aravinda deSilva (1720 runs), Arjuna Ranatunga (1455) and Roshan Mahanama (1152), to score 1000 runs against India. Kumble now occupies the second position among Indian bowlers with maximum wickets behind Kapil Dev's 253 wicket in 225 matches. It was India's first win after four successive defeats. Robin Singh playing in his 90th match received his only second Man of the match award of his career. His previous such award also came against Sri Lanka at Guwahati on 22-12-1997, which incidentally was in his 40th LOI match.
