Umpire Pathirana suspended

A Sri Lankan umpire was barred from standing in one match of the triangular Aiwa Cup one-day tournament for commenting publicly on a controversial decision, officials said today.

D.N. Pathirana, acting as third umpire, gave Australian opener Adam Glichrist run-out in the first match of the tournament against Sri Lanka even though television replays appeared to show the batsman had made his ground.

He later told the local Daily News that his decision was based on what he could see on television replays.

The umpires' committee, which met today to discuss Pathirana's comment, barred him from officiating in the match between Sri Lanka and India, to be played in Colombo on Saturday.

Pathirana, however, stood in the day-night match between Sri Lanka and India today.

D.N. Pathirana was suspended under the International Cricket Council (ICC) code of conduct that bars players, umpires and team officials from making any comment to the media that is seen as detrimental to the game.
